Private Edward James Fright - 58th Battalion Passchendaele

He run in the sand, swam in the surf, on shores of the great North Sea
Laughing on the beach of Birchington England, happy wild and free
Imagine the dreams of a boy of ten, on his skin the sea breezes blow
Life’s winds were changing fast, more than young Edward would know

First his Dad, then his mom sailed off to their heavenly home
Leaving the two boys as orphans, with no parents of their own
Edward a lad of ten, his younger brother Alfred was only seven
Two young boys sent to an orphanage, their parents gone to heaven

Crossing the waters of the Atlantic, to Barnardo’s in Toronto far away
They became servant boys in Dorchester, at the Corless home they stay
Edward a servant until sixteen, he would work in the family home
Far from the North Sea, the ocean breeze, the surf of ocean foam

Soon Edward became a bank clerk, this small man of five foot four
Young smart and sophisticated, who was a servant years before
At nineteen years Edward had a calling, once again he would sail the sea
Pte Edward James Fright would serve the King, to set the world free

Edward enlisted January 1 1916, following a love that was in his mind
Probably said goodbye to Alfred, the younger brother he’d leave behind
He sailed back to England, years ago he ran in the sun and the surf
When transferred to the 58th battalion, he showed the world his worth

Pte. Fright fought in Passchendaele, where hell rained from all around
Amid the craters, the mud, the horrors of death, all pounded in this ground
If the enemy found this man, loaded with his rifle and kit at five foot four
He would join his parents in heaven, his rifle silent for evermore

A muddy land of horror, as far as Pte. Edward James Fright could see
The few remaining trees scaled of limbs, the price of death was free
Canadian soldiers were all heart, determination overflowed with pride
Thousands fell to an unknown grave, in mud of Passchendaele Edward died

So many things along lifes road, Pte Edward James Fright never got to see
Pte Fright is remembered on the Menin Gate, like the wind he is forever free
Edwards thoughts in Passchendaele, we recall his tiny footprints in the sand
Pte Edward Fright listed missing October 1917, killed in action in a foreign land

Date of death: 1917-10-26
